Kandi is an old municipal town in West Bengal in the district of Murshidabad. The name Kandi comes from a legend which says that Raja Man Sinha,a general of Emperor Akbar was returning from Bengal, while he found a woman weeping beneath a tree in the midst of a forest. He stopped and talked to the woman. From that day the place is known as ‘Kandi’ meaning ‘weeping’. It has a glorious historical background in its educational, cultural and agricultural domain. The Municipality has a privilege memory of having birth or activity of some great man like Acharya Ramendra Sundar Trivedi, Hara Prasad Shastri, Dijendra Lal Roy and others. There are spots of traditional pilgrimage and holy places like Sri Sri Radhaballav temple and Kandi Rajbati which is closely related to the heritage of this old municipal town, Rudra Deb, Dakshin Kali Temple, Pancha Mukhi Shib Mandir etc.

As of 2011 India census, Kandi had a population of 55,615. Males constitute 51.2% of the population and females 48.8%. Kandi is also a rural based municipality and according to the survey held in the year 2002, 32.62% of the people of this ULB(Urban Local Body) belongs to BPL(Below Poverty Line) category.

The Municipality has 17 numbers of wards and it has an area of 12.97 Sq.Km. Most of the people of this ULB are engaged in Agriculture and agro based Small Scale Industries. This municipality presently have 10147 numbers of houses and after flood devastation of 2000 the population of this municipality is increasing rapidly and emulation of such population density is also increasing day by day. Numerous number of villagers of adjacent Panchayat areas are migrated within this municipal jurisdiction and setting up new habitation and slum areas also.
